A Stressful And Negative Outlook Can Cause Memory Problems
Do you or someone you know suffer from A Stressful and Negative Outlook?
If so, not only is your physical health at risk, you may also be endangering your mental abilities, especially your memory.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that stress is a factor in almost all disease.
We have also known for some time now that exposure to severe and prolonged emotional distress, such as combat, can actually shrink the size of a certain area of the brain known as the hippocampus. This reduction in size can be as much twenty percent! That’s a huge chunk of your brain to go missing.
The hippocampus is responsible for storing and retrieving specific memories. It is believed that this shrunken hippocampus is responsible for the memory problems that are typical of those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
A recent study out of Rush University Medical Center has now shown that even mild prolonged emotional distress such as Stress and Pessimism can lead to cognitive impairment.
The brain damage caused by prolonged emotional distress seems to be most highly related to a negative and pessimistic outlook on life. This pessimism leads to chronic worrying, tension, anxiety, anger and, perhaps even feeling inferior.
Over time, these negative emotions may increase your risk of memory impairment by as much as 40 percent.
To make matters even worse, this type of cognitive impairment is related to the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
But there is hope!
