5 Steps To Becoming More Productive
All of us wish that we could be more productive, but sometimes things like being disorganized and procrastinating can keep us from reaching our full potential. Our goals and dreams can, at times, seem unreachable and the obstacles in our paths insurmountable. Fortunately, however, the secret to being a productive person who knows how to accomplish any task set before them really isn’t that difficult. All you need to know is how to get started, and I’m going to give you five simple steps to becoming a more productive you.
1. The first step seems very simple, but don’t let it fool you: you need to be able to see what needs to be done. Obviously the importance of any goal or project is the end result, what you hope to have achieved. The first part of becoming more productive, then, is to recognize what you want to accomplish. It could be as simple as getting the entire house cleaned, or as big as getting that promotion at work. The bottom line is that you can’t fight what you can’t see, and you can’t go about accomplishing something if you first don’t truly know what it is you want.
2. Next you’re going to write your objectives down. You see, people are generally not productive because of one of three reasons: either they can’t tell what needs to be done, they can’t keep track of all the things that need doing and so are likely to forget, or they procrastinate. We’ve taken care of the first one, and now we’re knocking the second of these problems. By writing your goals down, you are focusing on them and placing a greater significance on them in your mind. You’re going to be able to remember them, and you’ll have that piece of paper to turn to and keep yourself straight. This frees you up to plan on how you are going to go about achieving them.
3 Procrastination is the biggest enemy to productivity. Getting distracted away from our responsibilities happens to all of us, making it so easy to think about the things that we’d like to do instead of what needs to be done. And oftentimes, unless there are severe consequences for procrastinating, it’s much easier to goof off than work. But how do we get past procrastination? Make sure not to work yourself too much. Put your all into your goals, but don’t push yourself beyond your limits. The more you overwork yourself, the more tedious and droning your work becomes, making the desire to procrastinate stronger. So just make sure to set aside some time each day to indulge in things you enjoy doing. By making sure you’re not depriving yourself of any enjoyment, you are much less likely to procrastinate and shirk your responsibilities.
4. Once you’ve visualized your goals and set about a loose plan of attack, its time to get the ball rolling. This step is simple: just always make sure you are getting something done, no matter how small. Any achievement or movement forward is better than none, and the point of this step is to keep you in the habit of actually working towards your goals. A Chinese proverb goes “It does not matter how fast you go, so long as you do not stop.” The point here is that if you ever stop working towards your goal, it will be that much more difficult to get started. Get whatever little things you can done, and you’ll notice that all those tiny accomplishments will quickly add up.
5. Finally, create reminders of why you are doing what you are doing. Everyone has a reason for their actions, and everyone has things that motivate them. If you want a big promotion at work, occasionally think about how nice a new sports car would be, or about how much better your job would be. Stay in touch with your motivations – they will keep you going even when you’ve lost all will to continue forward. A motivated person is a powerful person, and is capable of doing anything they set their minds to. Don’t forget the purpose behind your project, and you’ll find it much easier to accomplish.
The difference between success and failure is in planning and attitude. Visualize your goals, and write them down, making sure to commit yourself to them. Once you’ve forged your commitment, start some thoughtful scheduling, making sure to leave a little bit of “you” time in there to help keep you from becoming overloaded. Get the ball rolling, and make sure each day ends with achievement, no matter how small. Finally, keep your motivations and reasons for desiring success near to your heart. With this in mind, there’s absolutely no dream you can’t make into reality.
